5 New Year’s Resolution Ideas For Romance-Seekers

Setting Love And Romance Goals In 2021

If you’re still wondering what new year’s resolution to make for your romantic life this year, you’re not alone. Many of us have been so focused on surviving 2023—and weathering a chaotic start to 2024—that we haven’t given much thought to future relationship goals.

With COVID-19 still going strong and new variants of the virus cropping up, no one can be sure whether 2024 will be any better. Despite this uncertainty, there is one thing we can be sure of: the human need for interpersonal connection. The year’s turn is an opportunity to evaluate social goals. Whether you’re looking for a new relationship or trying to strengthen an existing one, a romantic new year’s resolution can help you focus on your goals.

In my experience, the best resolutions are actionable. If reaching your goal would ultimately be outside of your control (“I resolve to finally get married”), you may be setting yourself up for frustration and disappointment. The best goals are also well-thought-out. For example, it is okay to set a broad goal such as improving self-care (see below), but to be successful, I recommend you outline which self-care activities you are resolving to take part in.

The best resolution will likely be the one you come up with yourself. That said, here are a few examples of resolutions you might consider making for 2021:

Don’t waste time on the wrong people.

Do you have a nagging feeling that your current relationship isn’t right for you? Maybe your partner doesn’t seem to care about you or isn’t bringing enough to the table. Perhaps the relationship is riddled with conflict. Whatever your reason for wanting to leave, you may have been hesitating to cut ties during the pandemic. It is extremely difficult to meet new people right now, and you may have been reluctant to suffer through the weirdness in complete isolation. If that sounds like you, now may be a good time to look back and ask yourself whether it was worth it. Overall, do you feel drained or energized by the relationship?

Make yourself available for connection.

It’s okay to set the long-term romantic goal of finding a spouse, but I encourage you to dig deeper as you develop your new year’s resolution. Is walking down the aisle your priority? Or is a sustainable partnership what you’re truly seeking? The difference may seem subtle, but thinking carefully about what you want can help you create more actionable love and romance goals.

Find love on your own schedule.

Have you ever noticed that some people love to impose their opinions onto other people’s lives? If you recently ended a relationship, friends or family may be cautioning you to slow down and spend some time alone before jumping into a new relationship. Alternately, they may be pushing you to find a new partner even though you are perfectly happy being alone right now. For the coming year, you could resolve to set your own romantic timeline and not give in to other people’s opinions.

Invest in yourself.

This could be a great resolution whether you’re currently in a relationship or not. It is so easy to lose sight of yourself when you’re focused on finding or nurturing someone else. Instead of allowing the basics of self-care to go out the window, you could vow to sleep more or drink more water in 2021. You might also set a new educational or other self-improvement goals. Tending to yourself allows you to come into new relationships from a position of strength and evaluate potential matches more objectively.

Nurture platonic relationships.

Did you neglect friendships or family relationships in 2023? The coming year may be an opportunity to reinvest in these relationships and possibly create new ones. My patients often 3meet new romantic partners through friends or family. Even if you don’t, these kinds of connections can help satisfy your social needs. Non-romantic connections also provide opportunities to brush up on social skills—something most of us could use after spending the last year cooped up.

Make Sure You Know What You Truly Want

There are plenty of New Year’s resolution ideas online in articles just like this one. Many of these ideas are certainly worth considering, but it is essential to ask yourself what you truly want. This is your life, and you must set future relationship goals that work for you.

To brainstorm a new relationship goal, start by asking yourself: What went well last year, and what would I like to change? On the other hand, you may already know what you want to change without knowing how. Maybe you want to leave a relationship but haven’t found the courage. Or you’ve been attracting the wrong kind of person again and again without understanding why. Or you’re dissatisfied in a relationship but can’t put your finger on why.
